Belgian tech company wins Independent Community Pharmacist award

Each year, the specialised trade magazine Independent Community Pharmacist honours products and innovations that are shaping the future of the pharmaceutical sector. This year, for the first time a Belgian tech company has received an award. Meditech, based in Izegem (close to Bruges), develops smart automation and digitalisation solutions for pharmacies and won the award in the IT & Technology category. “We are very honoured. This award will further strengthen our brand’s global profile,” says Managing Director Timon Dejonghe.

The Independent Community Pharmacist awards are granted annually by a community of stakeholders from the British pharmaceutical sector. They honour the most innovative products and technologies that improve pharmacy operations and processes. Meditech is the first Belgian company to be granted one of the awards. “The pharmaceutical world is actually quite small. We have been active in the United Kingdom for four years now and have sold around one hundred robots there. For us, the UK is truly a growth market,” says Timon Dejonghe.

Meditech develops robots and software that support pharmacists in the distribution and management of medicines. Their systems increase efficiency by automating logistical tasks, and giving pharmacists a clearer overview of their stock. Today, the company employs 120 people and operates in 37 countries, in Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. “Currently, around 80 to 85 per cent of our turnover still comes from community pharmacies. However, we are gradually turning our attention to hospitals as well, where significant investments in automation are being made, partly because margins are under pressure in the healthcare industry.”

World-class technology, made in Belgium

Meditech’s automation solutions are among the market leaders. Worldwide, only a handful of companies develop comparable systems. The robots are fully developed in-house and manufactured in the Belgian factory. “Our machines stand out by their quality and reliability: each unit is built using the best components and requires no maintenance, allowing customers to rely on them for many years,” says Dejonghe. “We have been reinvesting our earning into the company year after year. This creates the time and space for our team to develop new ideas. That is precisely where our innovation strength lies.”

For Meditech, this British recognition marks an important milestone. The United Kingdom has long been a growth market for the company. “This award means a great deal to us because the recognition comes directly from the sector itself. Moreover, it will be noticed both in the UK and around the world. We are convinced it will open new doors for us,” Timon Dejonghe concludes.
